Brussels, 13 January 2025 – The Environment and Agriculture Committees of the European Parliament held today a joint Public Hearing on “Forest Monitoring for resilient European Forests”. They discussed current state and future strategies for the monitoring Europe’s forests in the relation with the EC proposal. The Hearing was informed by four speakers, among which CEPF Secretary General.
CEPF Secretary General, Ms. Fanny-Pomme Langue, participated in the second panel of the Hearing: “Harmonised Forest monitoring - how to obtain the best data for sustainable forest management”. During the session, she shared the concerns of European forest owners, addressing three key questions:
- Who needs European forest monitoring?
- What is the actual purpose of the proposal?
- Does the proposal sufficiently build on existing efforts?
Reflecting on these questions, Ms. Langue highlighted that a European forest monitoring initiative may be beneficial for policy makers under certain conditions; Whereas it is of no need for forest owners in daily management of their forests. She called for clarifying the actual purpose of the proposal, and highlighted the need to better build on existing legislations, national forest inventories, and ongoing EU research projects.
“Given the many issues that remain open, substantial clarifications and work are needed. We remain open and available to further work and to provide inputs and solutions”, said Ms. Langue. “We rely on co-legislators to improve this initiative in a way that ensures we avoid building a treehouse before growing a tree”, Ms. Langue concluded.
